2011 - "Firebird" - A Russian Fairytale

This enchanting theme was selected for a special reason – 2011 celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s world-first manned flight into space in 1961. Man’s fascination with exploration into space has fuelled the wildest imagination of people all over the world. Yuri Gagarin’s flight saw the rebirth of hope and belief that anything – even what seems just a “fantasy” – is possible!

It can be said that exploring the world of fantasy started with the telling of magical fairytale stories to children in all corners of the world.

And so these two “fantasies” were merged to form the theme of the
“Firebird – a Russian Fairytale”.

The ball was held at the Plaza Ballroom, Regent Theatre in Melbourne.

Despite the weather, we arrived in the city on time... as I had told all my guests to 'not miss a minute' of the nite. It was so.... grand to meander down the stairs of the Plaza Ballroom.. When were so amazed at the wonderful 'art deco' foyer with all the murals , patterns and designs of yesteryear. I felt like the 'Phantom of the Opera' was amongst us. Our lovely friends all arrived in time to sample the pre dinner drinks and canapes. I dressed in a black spanish style dress with a red boa, red gloves... G dressed as the prince in the Firebird folktale.

"I have attended every St. Vladimir's Ball for the past 5 years and strongly recommend anyone and everyone to experience the truly grand, elegant and extravagant Balls that RERC organises almost on an annual basis. I would have no doubt in labelling this Ball as the best Russian Ball in Australia."

French Invasion of Russia 1812

The French invasion of Russia of 1812 (also known as the Patriotic War of 1812, Russian: Отечественная война 1812 года) was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. It reduced the French and allied invasion forces (the Grande Armée) to a tiny fraction of their initial strength and triggered a major shift in European politics as it dramatically weakened French hegemony in Europe. The reputation of Napoleon I as an undefeated military genius was severely shaken, while the French Empire's former allies, at first Prussia, then Austria, broke their alliance with France and switched camps, which triggered the War of the Sixth Coalition.
